Bistriţa or in the Saxon name Bistritz, is documented for the first time as a city in 1264 and owes its genesis, evolution and physical characteristics to the medieval twin colonization to a large extent.

The Bistrița Medievale celebrations return in 2023 after a 6-year hiatus and aim to give the cultural product the scope and prestige of an emblematic event of the municipality, won through the XI editions held in the period 2007-2017, thus contributing to the diversification of the cultural act and to the consolidation of the image of the municipality of Bistrița as part of the Transylvanian medieval cultural heritage.

Conceptul ediției de vară 2023 este unul complex, dinamic, interactiv și inedit, punând în scenă elemente de noutate cum ar fi reconstituiri istorice cu cavaleri, vânători de comori sau tururi ghidate, activități interactive și creative care transformă publicul din spectator în performer. Deschiderea evenimentului va avea loc vineri 23 iunie la Biserica Evanghelică în cadrul unui spectacol extraordinar incluzând concertul trupei Bakchus din Cehia și momente de reconstituire istorică – jurământul Gărzii Cetății. Pe parcursul zilei de 24 iunie publicul larg va putea participa la concerte de muzică medievală – renascentistă (sec. XII-XVI) cu trupele Bakchus și Peregrinii; teatru medieval de tip commedia dell’arte cu grupul Skepsis; reconstituiri istorice oferite de asociațiile Terra Ultrasilvana, Străjerii Cetății Bistrița, Cancelaria Voievodului Transilvaniei și arcașii Rangers of the North; dansuri medievale cu grupul Nosa; animație specifică; spectacole cu teatrul de păpuși Funny Art; animație cu foc marca SiriuS; vânători de comori (Treasure hunt), târg de meșteșuguri vii cu ateliere meșteșugărești și creative realizat în parteneriat cu Asociația Produs în Bistrița-Năsăud, tururi ghidate cu participarea voluntarilor și cu sprijinul partenerului Facultatea de Geografie, specializarea Geografia Turismului, din cadrul extensiei Bistrița a Universității Babeș-Bolyai.
